Oil on linen panel 9" by 12" plein air. Painted at 10,000 feet near the pack station at Rock Creek north of Bishop in the Eastern Sierras. This was the final day of Frank Serrano's three day workshop with Michael Severin and Laura Xu. Lots of different color rocks in the creek; can't paint them all!

Thanks Michael and Cristina.   Michael, I think you are right about the tree, but I wanted something in the foreground there.  It might have worked better if I had thrown that whole right lower corner into shadow.  Well, it doesn't balance my potato rocks very well!

I really like your sense of light on this one Stu.  I wish I would have went to this spot on that final day!!   A word on editing:  The foreground pine ..nothing wrong with it, but I bet if you edited that puppy out and let the shadows tell the story, you would have a stronger painting?  ...

Thanks Joy. I think you are right about the rocks being too similar in shape. I varied the color and spacing and put in some other, smaller rocks with different shapes, but those three rocks on the left really grab the eye and sure look like they are the same shape.
