This watercolor began as a grid study, then became a value study and finally a color study. My pears have all gone but these were in the kitchen. The sun is coming through a south facing window.

Beautiful, and your group of tomatoes feel so real.  Only criticism is the perpendicular highlights of the two right-most tomatoes, a bit distracting.  The emphasis on the left one (center of interest) is brilliant.

Hi Julie, thanks so much!  A grid study is a way to sub-divide your paper or canvas to decide where to place your components for the most pleasing composition.  You draw dividing and intersecting lines on your rectangle or square and create a composition using those as a guide.  It is one of the early exercises in composition taught by Barry on the VAA site ... an excellent program if you want to improve your painting skills.

Hi Jane - great work. I love the translucent shadows of the tomatoes against the solid shadows of the solid pumpkin and garlic. What is a grid study?
