That is so true. Even with me, my advise is "saturated with the way I like paintings - that can not be helped" LOL. I would find it difficult to give advice to someone who paints totally abstract. I just dont think like that so would be of no help other than explain a glazing technique, etc. // I dont think Pacisso listened to anybody! He just painted the way HE WANTED! lol

Totally. And I think it is important - mainly to a beginner - to say specific things, otherwise it means nothing, I cannot translate it into doingness. When I started, I looked for some painters for this purpose, I found one who just told me basically to the effect of "what you do has a really small value" and that I should follow exactly how he does it. That was our first and last communication to each other. But at the beginning when you are just trying and have fun and look for some expert advice... I needed some time to get over it. But then it was good for something too: I learned that what matters is that people's opinion are just opinions and I have to select what I find useful and what is only a thought it someone's mind that everyone is entitled to have.

I totally understand good advice. I have a few people who will actually tell me what I am doing and help me solve my issues. It is so helpful for someone else to look and see! I dont know everything, but I do know some things. Ask me anything. Ro

Great advice! I never looked at my pictures this way. Probably it would do some good if some of the sky color/light would show up on the plants.
(I must tell you that I have been waiting for these kind of observations and advices for a long time. They are very helpful, specific and I can assimilate them into my view of things. Thank you very much)

Bernadett, One of the things I used to do to try to decide if I had enough lights (highlights) is to put my painting in a dim lit room. If the light is not really good........can you see the painting and tell what it is doing? If not, I would add more lights until I could see it doing something. This one might liven up if you put some highlights similar to the light you have on the water - on the bushes and grass. Another thing I used to do is look at my painting and say........"I like the water and the rocks on the edge". Now, what can I change in the picture to make me like the other areas as much as I like that. Does it need more lights for highlights, and look at those nice shadows on the bushes below the big tree on the right. Does it need some more darks someplace? Usually everything needs 3 values. light - where the light hits, medium, and darks - where they are in shadow. Your water and sky have 3 good values. Hope this helps. Ro
