Grapes
Leraning Points:
1. how to not make all of the grapes look the same? hmmmmm. not easy. I tried to vary the size and shape and color of each one.
( I need to work on grapes, I think they are about as hard as strawberries, so I will be doing more of them)
2. Lighter background (again) trying to get a handle on this one. The background color is Naples Yellow with a little bit of white, and then I went over it lightly with Currelean Blue and white.
3. Shadows: I lightened the shadow at the end ( it is hard to tell from the photograph) The grapes are lighter closer to the light source and darker further away.
4. To get the "glow" of the grapes I did an underpainting in cadmium red.
5. Too get a color balance and "pull it all together" I mimicked the grape colors in the stem, and also added a little green highlights in the grapes.
6. Atmosphere and blending...soft and hard edges. The grapes are blended into the background around the edges, as well as some of the stems.

Really beautiful painting !
Love the red 'rims' - reminds me of Wayne Thiebaud!
I sketched in the grapes (roughly) with a light red pencil ( I use a watercolor pencil in case I need to make changes) Then I spray it with a final fixative. Then I blocked in the entire shape first with cadmium red. I could still see faint lines of the drawing beneath to follow, plus I had the still life set to paint from. It is not exactly like my still life because I ate some of the grapes so some were missing lol...I painted one of them back in and just left the others out because I liked the shape of the "mass". I then put various greys I had mixed over it, and the darks are Prussian Blue mixed with a little cadmium orange which made a wonderful dark purple-ish color. The pinkish highlights are Indian Red and white.
Love the underpainting with cad red
Real good job on the grapes!! How did you begin the grapes ..did you mass the entire shape in first, or did you paint each grape?
Really pretty.
