Jennifer, if it works for you and you like it ...then that is what is important!!! ....like I said, either way, you have a beautiful painting ....I think I am just being  a little fickle. :))

Thanks for the instructions with the plastic Michael. I can't find a good reference from a great painter. I googled different things like what you suggested and oil paintings of avalon catalina, etc. and the ones I'm seeing have even more pronounced rows than mine, which almost makes me think my attempt to scatter them doesn't work with this scene. I feel the rows are an attractive element to the paintings I saw and I had tried to not have them be so pronounced. So they end up all scattered. I'll try what you suggested though. I think I'll put it in photoshop though instead of actually painting it. :) This was my reference photo

Hi Jennifer, Many big time artists have painted this scene ...look up some of these artists websites and check out how they handled the boats ...you will find it very illuminating.  Maybe Google ..."paintings of  Catalina Harbor" ..or whatever it is named.  Don't get me wrong though ..this is a really "kick butt" painting!!!  Here is an idea:  Put some clear plastic over your painting and put some blue painters tape over some of those boats that are in your rows ...I am doing that right now with my finger ....you will see that breaking up those rows of tidy boats, by taking a few out,  will make a huge difference.   Just go down each arcing row and remove a boat or 2 from the string....do it with the blue tape first ..then,  when you see a nice pattern emerging,  just paint the boat out with your water color!

Thanks Michael! I may change the boats as you suggest. They were pretty much lined up like that but i see what you mean. It's hard to know how much to change sometimes especially when it's something you've never painted (a harbor) I left a bunch of them out. I could name it "Full Harbor" haha:)

Very nice Jennifer.  I concur with everyone else.  One thing, be careful with your equal spacing and equal sized shapes of the boats.  Try to avoid the "ducks in a row" thing.  I think less would be more here ..and ...a more random look to the placement of the boats.

Thanks Ann! Lucky you! I just want to get back to the Southbay and see my family and my beach! But a trip to Catalina would be a dream! Were you able to paint while you were there?

Thanks so much Silvana! I tried to have a variety of hues and texture in the water so it wouldn't get to flat and uninteresting. :)

Thanks Jessica! No, it's good old Catalina Island off the coast of the Southbay in Southern California. The climate is mediterranean though! I'm glad you can appreciate the boats, they seemed never ending! My reference photo was zoomed out a lot and didn't have any bougainvillea. I know the island has it though so add it in to frame it. :)
