Original oil painting by Jeri McDonald; 16x20 oil on stretched oil primed canvas. I've begun to realize I can create solely from my imagination since forcing myself to relax as I paint and draw. As a result, I am happier with my final painting. My goal is to create a body of work that captures the beauty of the old coastal mission style of California. I love tile roofs, adobe architecture, bright bouganvilla and Mexican pottery.

I'm amazed at your imagination Jeri!  My favorite architecture and mood too.  As usual, Michael spots what we need right off, adjustments would really make it pop!

Thanks Michael. I tried to keep the cooler shadow area on the stones near the far left building green gray while keeping the building itself in bright warm tones. I didn't want to get too dark with contrast there as I usually get my values too dark most of the time. I was hoping to get the look of the sun hitting in random spots through my trees above. With no photo reference it was difficult but I do understand what your saying.

Hi Jeri.  I like your statement of goals and your concept very much.   May I suggest that you be more aware of the value differences of what is not in sunlight versus what is in sunlight.  Also, be aware of temperature differences between the two.  I don't feel the bright sunlight because of the lack of contrast between the shadows and light.  Bottom line:  Separate the light and shadow with more value and temperature differences ....
