Acrylic 11x14 canvas board

The purple behind the rock isn't actually purple nor is it that dark; but, I couldn't get that right, everything else is right----cliffs are hard!!!

The sea is especially nice!

Thanks Sharon; I'll have to make a trip to the art store later to pick up some acetate--that's a great idea. Like a lot of self-taught artists, I learned to paint before I bothered to learn the basics like drawing and values; now I'm playing catch up! I really appreciate everyone on this site giving their encouragement and insight!!

Michael was the first to give a great suggestion, and along with Lori and Eibhlin.  I agree that the back cliff is more in the glow so I think it would be warmer and lighter than the one in the foreground.  Try laying a sheet of the paint on acetate which is clear and paint on it to see if you like it before painting on this nice painting.  I squint and look at my paintings to see the values and if my focus is where I want it to be.  I'm still working on those skills.  What is your eye drawn to in this painting?

Thanks Sharon, Lori and Eibhlin!  I did glaze the cliffs to adjust the value and it does look a lot better, I also fixed the three background hills on the left side that were clones of each other and the area of the water behind the rock that was too dark and for some reason shows up as purple. I'm still thinking what to do with the grass on top of the hill.  Values are tough. I'm watching Sadie Valeri's videos on value and doing her exercises on values....it looks so easy when she does them; but, they're hard!

Great job on this Susan!

Sharon, values are the toughest aspect to get right I think!  Agree re the front cliff being a different value to create better separation.

I like your colors, and it is interesting the way you painted the grass on top of the cliffs, and maybe you could vary the value a bit.

The brush strokes in the bushes are varied and nicely done.  I considered putting that in and now that I see yours, I like it a lot.  I stand back from my paintings, and I  look to see if what I'm seeing has the values needed to give depth to my paintings.  Values are one skill I need to work on so this is what I noticed about your cliffs.  The value of the foreground cliff might be a bit darker for contrast.

Thank you all! Michael, I see what you mean about the cliffs, thanks!
