Hi Jane,

It is very exciting connecting and sharing with another W/C painter isn't it...    I also use the same wetting, stapling and tape method you described for the smaller paintings.  :))

Thank you I have connected with you as an official friend also...

Gambetta, thank you.

Pat, I generally brush the back and front of the paper with water and let it sit for 5 mins ... if there are any bubbles I will lift and re-wet the back once moe.  Then I generally roll a cotton tea-towel over it from the centre out to the edges to soak up the excess and begin to paint.  Before the edges start to curl I will staple them down and sometimes run a layer of tape over them.  I am thinking about using butchers tape and no staples but have not tried that method yet.

I am also very excited to connect with a fellow w/c ist.  Did you get my friend invite btw.?

haven't used Winsor CP before but it seems to behave similar to Saunders which also soaks up the paints, but is easier to lift than using Arches.  I use a 300gsm paper, which I believe, without googling the conversion,  is the same as the 140lb.  I don't recommend Lana paper, it does not lift at all..

Do you soak your paper beforehand and how long do you soak it for??  I have seen another artist only wet the back of the paper and apparently it helps to keep it from stretching too much...

It's so exciting finding another watercolourist on this site.  It helps too that you are good at what you do....  :))

Thanks for sharing.... !!

Your comments are much appreciated, thank you all.

Patricia, this was done on Winsor Cold Press ... I did not like the surface at all.  The colors soaked in very quickly and it was extremely difficult to lift.  I don't think I will buy it again. I am most accustomed to Arches 140lb cp but wanted to experiment with some different brands.

Jane, what paper did you use for this painting?

Jane,

Love your watercolors, they are always so expressive. The wheels back on the barn so nice and subtle and the chickens pick up so much light and lively color, very well done !

Thank you Rita and Patricia for looking and commenting.  This was an earlier attempt than the other one but gave me a clearer idea than my notans (and my other dismal attempts) of how I might change the composition. The key is to keep plugging along I guess:)
