Actually I prefer other areas of France for painting!!! Cloud shadows is from near Besançon... Glad you liked the book - you're right - it's all very hard to internalize!

Thanks Jon - I actually do have Ian Robert's book; it's extremely helpful (not that I've actually internalized that much of it yet - maybe some day!)  We stayed part of the time not far from Le Barroux the past two years (Bedoin/Mazan area) - so many lovely towns in that area; I'm sure you must always be discovering beautiful places!  Are you painting a scene from there?  Painting plein air in Provence - can't get much better than that!

Thanks Jennifer! - I wasn't sure that rim light read.

Jessica - have a look at Ian Roberts internet site he favours Le Barrou - I visited last weekend to see what the village is like - and his book on composition is excellent

Provence was fantastic, Jon!  We had a great time - 5th time in that area, which is so beautiful.  We used to go to the Dordogne but like Provence more.  You are surrounded by constant sources of inspiration!

I like the way your sky colours are reflected in the road & the yellows which take the eye back  - beautiful!  I think Michael makes a very good point about the pole.  By the way, I did see a cloud when in Provence, in almost the shape you painted in that previous painting, but didn't manage to take a photo!!

Jon, you did an excellent job with this painting!!   I think your values are right on and your use of warm and cool greens is very good.  You have a nice "pattern" composition and great depth.  Just as that tree at the end of the road connects the foreground to the middle ground ......the telephone pole might need to run above the horizon and into the sky a little ....that will connect the land mass with the sky mass and put the sky behind EVERYTHING.
