Clouds - evening settling in.

Oil on stretched canvas. 30" x 30". Have had this for quite a while just got out again. I need to place with gallery but still not happy with it but maybe had it too long hanging around. Anything at all you think re this would be gratefully received. Thanks. jen

Comment by Ningning Li on October 26, 2013 at 12:35: This is so natural and Beautiful. Everything in it are so harmonized. For me it is perfect. But you want some other idea, ok, let me see. May be put some warm light colour of the clouds in to the down part of the painting as it is all cool colour without connection with the sky and cloud. Some small refection from the water and some small dots from the houses hided in the woods... Is it a good idea?

Be interested to receive what you and others think between the two. And don't worry, with oils everything is possible and can always add/delete - which is why I love them so much. Please do tell me which one you prefer? and perhaps reasons, or any other comments, etc. Thks j

As said to Manneherrin am going to do as Michael suggests which, fingers crossed, will bring it up to a different level. After completing. it may also require the clouds to be added to.

I had put the sparkle on water today, but looked wrong due to rest of painting (did not photograph what I did for here, as felt this one (taken prior) looked better in order for comments back). Quite a bit of knife work in bottom area as well as other trees, so shall think on something for that area as cannot place water down there. Huge thank you again Michael.

Comment by Michael J. Severin on October 8, 2013 at 14:41: Your sky looks fine Jen ....I think the problem might be a lack of interest on the land shapes. Maybe if you had a spot light effect on the distant shore with a bright water sparkle. Lighten the black trees with some incidental light and bring the lake to the bottom of the canvas so we can enter the picture there and proceed to the spotlight. Put a little light on that small greenish hill at the left so your eye moves in a "S" pattern from the bottom of the picture (lake entrance), to the spotlighted far bank and shore, to the light on the hill (left side) and up to the light on the cloud ...There is your "S" shape. To bring your eye back into the painting, put a dab of light somewhere on the lower right stand of trees. Bottom line: a little more interest, drama, and compositional movement in the lower part of your painting.
