The challenge for me here was to keep my notan structure intact, trying to keep the fabrics within the darker tonal ranges. And not to overdo it on the details - which is actually so much fun to do I had to stop myself! Used a limited palette (White, YO, CR medium, AC, UB and Phthalo Green)
20" x 16"
water soluble oil on canvas

Thank you for your nice comment Cristina - I am glad you like the painting!
What a beautiful painting Jessica, you did an excellent job with those colorful fabrics!
Hi Carolyn - thank you very much! I really enjoyed painting those fabrics - the shuk is a riot of colour!
What an interesting and fun subject, Jessica. I'm in love with color and color contrasts, so it appeals to me at many levels. Great job rendering all the many variations and details without becoming overly fussy. The limited palette is working for you. . Nice job!
Hi Laura - thank you so much for your kind comment! It was really fun to paint these interesting & colourful fabrics - I did simplify them, but added some detail here & there.
Hi Jessica, I am looking at your painting for a long time and studying how you painted these complicate fabric so well and not overdone!
Thank you very much Jon for your nice comment! Actually I didn't increase the contrast - the photo of the painting came out quite accurately for some reason. There are many dramatic places like this in the shuk when you come out of a dark area into brilliant sunshine - fabulous place for photography!
The color is well controlled (not garish!) and the fabrics/cloths read really well - very nicely done. Did you slightly increase the contrast of the photo, Jessica? I would have imagined you would need to for it to be true to the original? The 'framing' composition is lovely!
Thank you very much Michael for the encouragement! With so much help & information on this site, it's hard not to learn & make progress!
Excellent Jessica! From all of your latest paintings, it looks like you have progressed to another level! ..your hard work is really paying off!
