This painting is acrylic and 600mm x 900mm (24' x 36'). I've got good positive criticism on a previous painting. One of my friends on the site helped me to locate my focus point and I have done it with this painting. I think it is much better now. Thanks Patricia.

Thanks for your comment Jen. Yes you are right about the cheese but it was the first time that I painted cheese. But I will work on it. I did dim the highlights down and it looks better. I will download the improved painting in a few days.

Pieter, What a superb painting.  I thought it was an oil until I read your details on it above.  Do like the composition and the background colouring sets these off really well. One could just pick those glasses up.   Agree with others re the highlights and with Patricia on leaving the ones on the left out, as when one puts one hand over those, picture seems to not need them.  May I say one thing? and that is think the cheese is not so believable as rest of the items - but that just may be me.  Really nice painting.  By the way, did you dim down the highlights as you said you would? as may be nice to see it adjusted and see the difference.

Hello Pieter, this painting really draws me in, perhaps because I enjoy the same compositional and
color challenges that your have taken on and executed so very well here. You have received most excellent suggestions from Michael and Patriica. As much as I love it, the areas they pen-pointed gave me a bit of unrest. The highlights, definitely. Patricia has more courage than I but she is exactly right...too much has taken away from the focal point/area. Beautifully done, will enjoy seeing the changes, a daunting task to re-work what one has spent so much creative energy and time on. However, the end result is always worth it.

Hi Pieter,

It's another very beautiful painting and you certainly have the eye for detail and colour.  WOW!!    I like the way you have both bottle labels pointing inward towards the two wine glasses and spotlighting that area with the lighter background.  A very nice touch indeed,  So well done for getting the focal point right.

The focal area is different to the focal point.  The focal area should be about one quarter of the canvas size and located off center  according to author and  artist Jane Hofstetter.

I agree with Michael about too many highlights.  The clear glass bottle on the far left hand side, in my opinion is the culprit. It is also outside of the focal area and it a bit distracting. You want to keep your highlights on the two glasses though because this is what the painting is all about.

Try putting your finger over the clear bottle in the above picture and see what a difference it makes.    However, if you remove the clear bottle, then the gaps between the main bottle and the wine bottles either side of it, are equally spaced, which makes the painting too symmetrical.

So I put my hand over the last two bottles on the far left hand side and bingo!  The focal area on the right hand side becomes stronger.  You also mentioned that you were going to dull down the highlighted areas outside the focal area so let's see if this makes a difference..

Michael I think you are spot on. I've still got the painting and will make the corrections. I will dim the highlights on the 3 bottles on the left. That's what I like from this website. People that not only say it's beautiful, but give you the right tips to improve you painting. Thanks Michael.

Hi Pieter.  Great painting Pieter!!  Good concept, nice movement from left to right!!  Some nice lost and found edges here and there. .....a lot of good things happening.  I have only one suggestion Pieter, and that is to be careful with all those highlights.  There might be too many highlights, all glistening with the same intensity?  It is really difficult to use restraint on that because the highlights are so doggone exciting!! ...I am going to reference Richard Schmids book, "Everything I know about Alla Prima Painting" ..he has a list of "mistakes" that a painting can have ..and one of them is  .too many highlights.
