In this exercise, I ignored perspective, drawing, and really everything except simplified values.
I printed the reference photo in full color, and also in "posterize" with 3 values (upper left)
I pre-mixed several colors of each of the three values, then roughly put them on the toned canvas. I learned that random colors really don't have a great look to them even if they are in the same value and from the same three primary paints. They need more to tie them together. However, I wan't working toward color harmony--just seeing if 3 values really does make a strong design.
I don't like the result, but I did learn a couple things, and I'm motivated to "exercise" more in the coming year.

Silvana, I have to be honest and tell you that I can count on my fingers on one hand the number of painting exercises I've done--but I hope to become a hard worker ; ).

Well I think the result is pretty darn good!!! .....What might be bothering you is the "tentacle" shapes of the tree shadow ...simplify that shape and see what happens.  Also, There is a humongous difference between your darkest value and you lightest value ...try your darkest dark a few steps up the scale and your lightest maybe a step up?  anyway, just a suggestion.
