Comment by Michael J. Severin on September 12, 2012 at 9:52: Not just peoples heads .... the more overlapping the more planes, the more planes, the more depth in your painting. Also, the overlapping of the long line breaks the line up so the viewer does not follow that line. Your line is pretty straight, but if it was meandering, it would be a slower line and would not necessarily need to be broken. The head of the child is ALMOST "kissing" the line ... which would not be good...just that fluff of hair breaks it. It is really no big deal Cheryl because the head overlaps enough to give space between it and the line. It's just that you came awfully close to "kissing" that line. If you are going to overlap that shape in your next painting ..... do not overlap the head in half ... use one-quarter or three-quarter. Make a quick linear drawing of your painting but don't overlap the head and line at all ..... see how easily the depth is lost. Happy painting!!!

If it's there, I paint it there! Is there a rule about placing people's heads on or off of planes? I would be curious, because my daughter wants me to paint the same type scene of our granddaughter. I've just sketched her figure out on paper, so it isn't down on the canvas yet...so I have time to fix it! Let me know!

Anyway, This is a beautiful painting!! Your use of warms and cools, reflected light, and value placement .. all good! The child's reflection, shadow, and the water shape from his back to the edge of the canvas, keep the figure tied into the picture .. excellent! The child's head just barely breaks the line of the incoming foam ... whew! Look at the figure work of Renoir and see how he controls edges ... nice job Cheryl. Happy painting!!

I was scrolling through your pieces and found you do beautiful work. I noticed on your profile that you started out as a realistic painter...same here. I can't quite do the painterly thing. I tried on my last piece, but couldn't help myself with the detail. The one I'm working on now, which is a repeat of the last one, I've removed the small brushes from the table....well almost all of them...ha! I thought I wouldn't be tempted to do the detail. But I can't quite get it. It looks sloppy...probably is, but I guess I have to start somewhere! happy painting...
