Thanks Ruby.  I am a bit of a detail addict and have problems simplifying, especially with plein air works.  Stu

Thanks, Robin, that's really a compliment.  I actually did take some people out.  I am posting a similar one now you may find interesting; there are lots of people in it.  It's another farmer's market scene.

Wow, reminds me of Renoir.  Though I don't see overcrowding of people at all, I too have the problem of wanting to add too much.

It is difficult sketching people in a crowd because they never stay still. I find that sketching at the beach is best...they are either sitting or lying down for long periods of time. Capturing them with a camera works, but selecting the best parts to paint has always been difficult. You have given me a new challenge. Thank you.

Nancy, this is not plein air so I shoot a lot of photo references and try to simplify by taking out stuff I don't need, move a few people around, block everything in and then start detailing at my focal point with softer edges, less contrast and less chroma as I move away from the focal point.  The painting can get a little busy.  For some really good and loose figures, look at Hazel Cronins figures from Dublin on this site.  She has an uncrowded scene with some really cool and impressionistic figures.  My photo reference is very good for figure heights and it's not too hard to leave out and add in people and objects.  My biggest problems are too much detail and not leaving out objects that are not necessary.  Give it a try, it is kind of fun.  Stu

Stu, I have often wanted to paint a farmer's market, but feel it's overwhelming. You did such a remarkable job of capturing the busy scene. How do you do it?
