Thanks Lori and Gail for your kind comment. GAIL, read below to my comment on 9/25/10. Other than that, I think if the colors are getting dull you are adding to much gouache. Brighter or darker colors must have less gouache and more pure WC. It has been years since I did this, but I think that would be right. Also, you can put the WC down first (like the really dark shadows in the pine trees) and then start adding the gouache mixes on top (like the highlight on the trees). The gouache will disolve and move so you pretty much can not go over it again except for light and lighter touches of color. Touches.. no blending. You might keep trying it and work with small canvases - I used illistration board. This painting is a wet in wet tech mostly with just touch ups in the trees and grass. I hope this helped. Have you ask the other artist how she keeps her colors bright? Ro

I agree with Lori about the clouds! You'll have to teach me this technique! I know another artist that paints native birds - that mixes her WC paint with Gouache. They are so bright! Yet I get dull and muddy - why? What am I doing wrong?

Sem, no the clouds are made with "fresh" squirted out white gouache along with watercolor. You start on the left putting in the blue and fast, fast before it dries you work in the clouds dipping into various colors of pure white to the grays. It is all done wet and fast - NO touch ups will work. Glad you liked the sky. Ro

Thanks Marek. I painted that back in 1985. I know more now than I did way back then. I no longer own the painting. As far as I can remember there IS NO FIXING to be done on a painting that is WC and gouche. You have one shot at it. If a drop of water gets dropped on the painting it disolves the paint and leaves a hole. yikes! LOL Ro

Sky is very nice, hills and snow required some work on depth. But Mr. Robinson for sure could add some advice.
