They are all oil on canvas of around 50 x 60 cm (plus or minus a bit!). The one on the right "The Cow Byre" (of which there are two versions here!) has given me a lot of grief ;( . The second from left is my artist friend's take on what to do with "The question". I feel I've learned an enormous lesson there!

Well, I've used the computer to help me study values, etc. But my friend just used a tabletter to do it "cos he wanted to quickly show me his idea and he's a watercolorist not oil pâinter - just a convenience.
Thanks for liking my grassy area - it often got to OK stage - but never "aha" stage - I need to slow down..
So you somtimes try to manipulate the photo digitally and see if it looks OK, and then try and paint Jon?
BY the way I like Cow Byre paintings. I like how the grassy area came out( 2nd from right)
Yeah, my friend did a digital one of that one - second from the left - and I "copied" it in paint to see if
a) I could do it
b) try to get the lesson into my mind!
For the Cow Byre I've just been going round in circles pretty well (did it a number of times!). I've had enough of it and will call it a day for now - I'll put the versions up together for help if ever I come back to it - thanks for the offer!
Hang on, I'll post it - it's the other one, Stu!
So, Jon, I think I can see the lesson, but tell us all exactly what you did and why so that we can all share in your new knowledge. An alternative would be to post them next to each other on your page and see if we can all figure out what you did to improve the painting. In my opinion, your cow byre on the left is more interesting as far as the composition goes, but your reflections and your tree seem better in the one on the right. You could post these side by side for suggestions as well if you are having that much grief. I think all of these are pretty good. If your artist friend painted the second from the left, we all need some lessons from him (her); if you painted it, you are a quick learner and know who to get your critiques from. Nice work. Stu
Beautiful!
