Gail, floating is when the framer puts the watercolor paper right on top of the mat, not under it. (They have to put small spacers in-between the watercolor and the glass, so it sits back a little.) That way you can see the lovely crumpled edges. It doesn't work for every piece, but it can be very lovely. It is definitely my favorite way to frame a watercolor!

I used to have a mat cutter, and would cut all my mats and my students mats for WC. That seems like 10 million years ago. hehe I dont think I ever saw any paintings that were floated way back then. Ro

These little ones I sell unframed (8x10 so they can be put into a pre-made frame)... however when I do frame larger pieces I love to float them!
