Susie, getting back and forth from left to right brain is difficult for many people.  When you see someone doodling or daydreaming in the middle of some event where everyone else seems to be paying attention, you have spotted someone who does not have that difficulty.  Think about trying to talk when you are painting; you can't do it very well--artistic creativity=right brain & speech=left brain.  Fascinating stuff.  Playing the piano=right brain and relaxing.  If you want to teach people to paint or draw and how to get into their right brain to be creative, get Betty Edwards "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain"; she has a workbook also.  Also Carl Purcell's "Your Artist's Brain" is great stuff (that's my left brain telling you this).  But golf, I don't know.  For me it seems relaxing when I play well, but that is so seldom that I have not been willing to devote the time it takes to get my game to a satisfying level and maybe I never could.  As frustrating as trying to paint better can be, I have had a burning desire to put in the time and effort for that, much as I have done for surgery and teaching.  We seem to be following each other around in all the same artist's corners.  I find it fascinating that so many people in so many places can do such wonderful work.  Sorry to intrude in your space Peter; I did visit your website--neat stuff and a nice painting.  Stu

does it have anything to do with getting back and forth from one side of the brain to another?  i always heard that playing the piano is an excellent way to help with that and i started lessons when i was six! - still love to play...the number one golfer in the world luke donald is also an artist and i believe he plays the piano as well....strange...maybe you guys just need to give golf a fighting chance...if you'd ever put down your brushes long anough...that's what tears at me...i long to paint and i long to golf and i long to paint and i long to golf.......good thing there are plenty of rainy days in indiana...third straight day for pete's sake...

Stuart, that makes a lot of sense. So much of both is about spacial relationships. And, no, I didn't know that. Thank you.

Susie and Nancy,  did you know that the same part of your brain that is involved in the creativity needed in your art is involved in playing?  Although I like to paint and love plein aire painting too, I don't like to golf, probably because my game is so poor and I am too lazy to work at making it better.  Stu

Hi Suzie,  I love to golf as well.  It reminds me of playing outside as a child.  Golfing for years with my husband and girlfriends, has not improved my game as much as I would have liked, but it is really fun.  I guess being outdoors is another reason I love plein aire painting.  It's all fun.

sometimes it does seems a little silly...chasing a little white ball all over the joint...but when you're hooked..you're hooked!!  i love golf...doesn't hurt that my hubby loves it as well and we've enjoyed lots of courses and have lots of good memories and painting fodder...couldn't access your site - i think you have a slash where you meant to put a dot.  i'll try and pull it up on my own...i have two websites...www.susiegregory.blogspot.com  and www.susiegregoryfineart.com   i started a daily painting blog a few years ago but don't have time to post daily anymore - since i got onto this site, i have little time for anything else...but isn't it fun??

No time for golf. A lot of hastle over a little white ball....http://www/paint-landscape.com

Been out all day in the Trossachs with my camera and sketching ready for a lot of painting. The sun was out and the colours fantastic, makes a change.

Peter.

Susie, if this was for me, I'm a terrible golfer and seldom play.  Too much left brain for me=no relaxation and too much stress; that happens when you seldom play.  And we have better weather than you or the Scots--go figure.  Stu

peter...scotland, eh? - that's what i love about this!! i'm in indiana, stu's in california and you're in scotland, for cri-i-i....are you a golfer, by any chance? - we were lucky enough to play the old course in the mid-nineties..as well as a few others.  that's why i have a hard time getting to my studio...there's so much golf  to play in the summer..and the spring and the fall for that matter!!
