May I make a suggestion? I have very little experience as a painter and consider myself to be just off the bottom of the learning curve, but I have photographed wildlife for decades (my photo website). One guideline in photography that I think applies here is 'get a highlight in the eye, it gives your subject life'. If you printed the picture of your painting and added a highlight you could then easily see which you prefer, with or without.
