Hi Jennifer.  very nice design ..a lot of movement with poetry.  Value, edges, and color play a large role in getting the Koi under the water.  The deeper the koi, the softer the edges and more closer in value and color to the water.  Another technique would be to paint the water, then wipe back the Koi ...the lighter the wipe, the nearer the Koi to the surface, the darker the wipe, the further down.  You can then paint the Koi shape into the wiped out area with the appropriate color , value, and edges ....using the wipe out image as a guide.  That is the technique I use when painting logs or rocks under the water.
