Original oil painting by Jeri McDonald. I was inspired by Richard's coastal beach paintings of New Zealand and decided to paint one myself, only I chose this photo of Kona's Secret Beach. I used Phalo Blue, Cad Yellow Lt and Medium, Cad Red Lt and Medium, Phalo Green, Ultramarine Blue and Cad OJ. The colors are a tad more chroma on this picture but in real life the colors are a little less red on the trees. All in all I think I got the highest chroma I could over the entire painting which was what I wanted to achieve. I'm going to try a very low chroma next to see which I like best. One of my goals on this painting was to draw attention to the light at the end of the beach in the back near those palm trees. I may glaze that area more once it dries. All wet on wet technique. 8x10 canvas board.

Great work Jeri. You've not only captured the intensity of the seas colour but also added vibrant and  strong off shore movement. I agree with Ann and Lori re the log... but even so, lovely artwork.

Thank you for the critiques. I do appreciate them and the compliments. The log is actually in the picture so I decided to put it in even though I thought it might be distracting. I plan on painting another one as this is a study on getting chroma high mostly and being able to do the wet on wet without blending and muddying up the paint. Composition wasn't my priority but experimentation and testing before going to larger canvas. I'm doing all 8x10 cheap canvas boards that I can store easily! I have boxes now taking up all the closet space with paintings that I can't hang up without covering every wall! But I do think it does distract the eye.

Great color and energy in this painting. The log in the front does keep the eye from entering the painting or at least stepping over it. If you changed it slightly so that the viewer can come into the painting on the sand at the left it would help to complete the S shape that goes to your focal. The area at the top where the sky has energy next to the leaves is my favorite area !

I really admire your ability ! I can't get wet in wet to save my life!!!very nice colors !! The only thing I might change -- and composition is NOT my strong suit, so please be mindful of that - is the log in front.. It sort of keeps pulling my eye there .. If it was positioned to point to your highlighted spot I think it would serve you well!
