Tried another harbour painting, this time a scene in Provence, where the fishing boats were tied up at the dock.

Thank you very much, Nancy! I'm planning to work on it a bit more today. Painting boats & a beautiful sunny port in the Mediterranean is a pleasure!
Jessica, this was quite an undertaking with all the boats and buildings. Bravo! Beautifully done painting.
Wonderful critique, Michael - greatly appreciated! I thought there was something "missing" from this, but couldn't figure out what the problem was - will try to incorporate your suggestions & post again. Reconstructing the port buildings should make a big difference! Might need to change the title of the painting though :) Thanks for taking the time to point out what could be improved!
Very nice Jessica. I love your foreground elements!! very nice abstract shapes ..very interesting area ....very, very good!!! I like the way you have composed the painting with a small amount of shapes ..very effective. In some areas ..like the left bank of white boats, buildings, and trees ...you have created repetition ..which is good, BUT, you need variety ..or else you run the risk of boredom....so, more variety there. Your building on the left look a little like cut outs that are pasted against the sky. The solution: even though the picture is not like this, why don't you make the first, second, and third building taller? ...the first building would go all the way up, the second ..all the, but with a corner of sky, and the third a little lower, but much taller then it is now. REDUCE the sizes of the buildings as they approach the tower ..about the same size as the other side. Now, flatten your horizon line under the tower and the building next to it. That will give you a more interesting line back there AND keep those boats from looking as if they were going uphill. Infuse some of the warmth from the building into the water. A nice variety of line and interval can be achieved if you punch up those boat mast on the right side ..then reflect the vertical movement into the water. That will give you a nice rhythm of line and interval and also repeat the vertical shape of the tower. Make sure you cool some of those buildings as they recede. :)
nice work Jessica
