Thank you Charles, Silvana!

Charles, I will take your advice, review the painting again. I may not fix this painting but your advice will be great benefit to my future paintings. Thank you again!

Laura, you have taken on two difficult challenges in this painting:  dominance of the horizontal and green.  Both are difficult.  A couple of suggestions.  First study the way the impressionist used color, value and temperature (warm v, cool) to deal with dominance. For example, the dark in the bank across the water, could be expressed with a green darken with red would create a unifying dark and the foreground could be enhanced with warm colors which you have done some with the red-orange.  Second suggestion:  convert the photo of the painting to a black and white image and evaluate with mix of values.

Michael just happened by and read your comment to Laura.. You are so correct....We are artists, and there are cameras for recording scenes...Then I saw my name,,,and was truly humbled by your comments,,Than You Michael!!! I know plein aire painters that think they must be true to the scene,If a tree is stumpy, thats the way they paint it....I so agree with you....Thats what should make us better than a camera....Make a shape more beautiful,,,,Leave something out,,put something in.....Well said Michael...

Laura, try not to think of anything as "rules".  It is being artistically creative ...your are not recording the scene for us ..there is a camera for that ..your job, as an artist, is to create interesting compositions, shapes, color, etc. that tell the viewer what you saw that made you want to paint it ..make the viewer feel what you were feeling toward this subject.  Thomas W. is very good at that! ...he make us feel his excitement of the place with just crazy brushwork, color, value and shapes .....but he puts it  in all the correct places ..and he emphasizes what turned him on to the scene in the first place.  I do not think he is thinking of rules ..but he is painting what he feels.  This is what we must do also.  So Laura, when you go and paint, find a way to alter the scene ..whether it needs it or not ..most time it will ..nature does not supply us with ready made compositions ..make great shapes, contrasts, color ...exaggerate what you see ..don't just copy.
