ah well, had to make the reeds up - I've sort of lost it ;( - but usually, once I do a subject, it 'comes back' down down the line - next time, I'll be concentrating on the reeds! (sorry to be boring!)

Jon, I understand your battle. But there is always a next attempt or escape. I tried to understand your problems by "fiddling"with YOUR painting in fhotoshop using your painting elements. I cut out the big tree on the right and made ven morse space in the didge. Perhaps it helps to create some rest in the composition and logi in the light and dark. I hope that you can appreciate this friendly lifeline and try nr 4!

Jon, what Michael said about the trees, I have the same problem with.  I''m taking online mentorimg with a really good artist,  and this is "one" of the things he corrected me on.  Too much detail, lifting the brush too much, too many skyholes, too many highlights.  I think you and I are trying to put in too much information, which leaves nothing for the viewer to complete . I  think I get it in my head, if only it would filter down to my brush hand when I try to paint!  Well, let's see what Michael says!  :)

Michael, I'll always appreciate your being bothered to share - you can get on my case as much as you can stand!!! We're lucky to have you! :)

Maybe I don't really know what my aim is - probably interesting texture/brushwork - I should maybe have done a series in a smaller size and used thick paint?

or just spent much more time finising the first one?

Can you explain what you mean about the tree/shapes, Michael - I don't get it?

Jon, I am going back and forth between your first two versions and this version. What was troubling you on the very first painting? Your values and color temperatures were right on, and your colors were clean. I do like the composition of this version though. Jon, I know that I get on your case a lot about this, so sorry for bringing it up again ... your trees .. think "shape" not tree. ..... paint an interesting shape that gives the illusion of a tree ... the more simplified that shape is, the better.
