Any suggestions to improve this are appreciated! Was trying to convey the beautiful afternoon light and shadows on the ancient walls of the city. That is really a staircase leading down from the walls directly into the sea, which was quite choppy that day!

Hi Ann & Britt - thanks for your kind comments & encouragement! I appreciate it!  If I remember correctly, the structure that looks like a floating bridge is actually a sort of roof over an area underneath which has a restaurant & tables beside the sea!  I know it's impossible to figure that out from the painting, but it makes a good lead-in, so I left it - maybe it adds some mystery!  I thought it might look like a sort of hanging bridge or walkway - for very brave people!!

Jessica, I can't wait to see this after the drawing edit!  Nice job on the slight variations of color and value throughout that complicated structure!  It's so hard to make things like that weird floating bridge-like thing? believable when we don't see them often enough to fill in detail automatically.  Yet, the painting would lose a lot without it....hmmmm....

Jessica, I have enjoyed reading this discussion. It is a beautiful puzzle for you to figure out. You took on a challenge with this one, I agree with you that the warm sky is beautifully done and the warm light on the buildings is the subject well worth painting. I wish you good luck and happy painting ! I look forward to your repost !

Hi Laura & Silvana - yes, it's become more of a challenge than I expected!  Hope to get a chance to work on it in the next few days & will repost it (if I manage to fix it, that is!)

Okay, I see.  It looks like you brought yourself in a little closer then the photo shows ....In the photo, you are looking down on the subject ...in your painting, you have us looking either straight on or slightly up at the subject.  This is a very nice photo,  great subject matter with good light and shadow patterns.  BTW, do you see that dark blue/green shadow/reflection under the walls? ....suggest you put that into your painting ..it will anchor your dark mass of the city and tie it into the  lead in wall.  Boy, good luck on this one Jessica!! ...You have a real good foundation for a great painting here ..so please do not give up on it.  :))  P.S.  This is a painting that you will really need to concentrate on perspective  ..because you have so many vanishing points to consider.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, Michael - thought I'd upload a photo from the scene - as you can see, I did make some changes here other than the horizon - so I think I know how to fix it after your advice!  The colour was much more like I painted it than the photo shows.
