Thanks again...I agree, I think it will be interesting to compare the two. I usually use a sienna or pale, warm orangy Underpainting because I prefer a warm painting. So I will look forward to the comparison : )

I would not do anything with this one, Christine.   Do another one, but this time give it a warm underpainting ..burnt sienna, burnt umber, or reddish ocher ...anything warm.  The warmth will glow through the shadow sides of those rocks!!!!

Thanks Michael. I totally get what you are saying. I have been struggling as I look at this because I can tell it is cool. I thought the warm greens might be enough to warm it, and the scene was not as blue as this but I tried using a canvas with a pale blue underpainting for the first time...just to see what it would do. It was fun to work on, but I can tell it needs to be warmed up. I don't know if I can tell just how to do it here though. I will have to analyze it a bit more. This is one of those times that I would like to have some clear acetate to try on some other colors ( = I may have to get some. I'm not sure just what to do, and I don't want to haphazardly mess with it.

I really appreciate your comments...I will see what I can do with it, and even try it again.

Christine, this is a very good composition.  A nice lead in and movement up the cliff to the sun drenched top plane! Your painting has a very dominant cool tone ..... but there are NO warm passages.  Your shadows are cool, so your lights must be warm.  You also need some warmth into your cool shadows ..both the rock face and the darks of the pine trees.  Your dominant darks are connected ..that is good.  You have nice balance in your arrangement.  You just need to keep in mind that warm/cool thing.  Don't discard any element of composition just because it is a 5 x 7 study! ...... go for the whole thing.
