Oil, Flemish technique, 18x24 gallery wrapped Ampersand Gesso Bord-smooth finish. This was rather a fast painting for me as I finished it in only 18 days. The Flemish technique has 7 layers and causes the painting to have much greater depth in appearance. If you are interested in learning about this technique contact me as I have places that have free demos to send you to for more information. I became interested in building a light box to control the light in a still life setup. The light in this painting is as I saw it, no make up lighting. If you are interested in building a light box instructions can be found here. http://www.drawmixpaint.com/ Scroll down and look for "Making a Shadow Box".
The colors used for the background and cloth were Prussian Blue and Paynes Gray and white. The pot was Paynes Gray and the leaves were colors right out of the tube and any mixes were just a combination of 2 of those colors to make a transition of color. Bt. Sienna, Raw Sienna, Cad Yel Med, Cad Orange, White.
The Flemish technique has seven layers. 1. Tone canvas=Imprimatura - draw or transfer your drawing to the canvas and outline with Indian Ink 2. Establish values in Bt. Umber 3. Deepen where needed for your darks 4. Doodvert (killing with paint) is a gray layer with 5-6 values of gray. Spend most of your time on this layer and get those values right! 5. First color layer 6. Second color layer to strengthen values where needed 7. glazes and highlights (often use pure white). It is necessary to add more oil to the mix of your painting medium for each layer for the fat over lean rule. Often artist will "oil out" the area they plan to work that day by rubbing linseed oil on the canvas, letting it sit 3 minutes, and wiping it off a bit with a lint free rag. This allows the paint to glide on the canvas which is applied very thin. The canvas is very smooth. The light actually passes through each layer and reflects back to the viewer thus giving it great depth.
Hope you enjoy my painting.

HI Roena.  Very beautiful as befits the Flemish Technique!!  You have been really studying this and it shows.   You described the colors used  as "Right out of the tube",  but to those who do not know what the Flemish method is, it reads as if you mixed these colors and then put them on alla prima ..which is going to confuse some.
