Thanks Jessica!!!  I did lighten up that back gorge like Michael suggested, and tweaked a few other areas.   Looks better, but don't want to keep re posting the same painting, so on to the next!

Thanks Charles!  I am going to rework this today.  Just amazes me how I don't see something so very obvious (maybe it would have hit me hard later, don't know?).  Agree on the expanse, however what really always amazes me here is the endless sky, I seem to always be looking up!  :)

Been there; a remarkable area.  Lucky you.  A great deal of challenging detail in the scene.  Well done.  Good suggestions from Michael.  Another thought, when painting the New Mexico desert, I think horizontal over vertical because to me it speaks to the expanse.  That said, Georgia O'Keeffe created some wonderful square and vertical paintings of New Mexico landscape.

Thanks Michael for checking this out, and especially for pointing out that back gorge!  Although this photo is way darker than the painting (gave up on trying to get it), that area still needs to go lots lighter.  Again, I'm probably messing up by not thinking through the photo references, soon I will get out and paint plein air!   I'll throw a bit more gold into the sage!

Hey Candi, I like this one.  Great sense of foreground, middle, and distant planes!!  Now, follow the canyon to that dark part in the distance ...okay ..lighten that ..it is  way to dark. ..it should be almost the same value as the background plane it is in ...keep in mind that the further in the distance you go, the less the value contrasts.  Normally, I would not mention this if it did not effect the painting ...but it does.   For the sake of a more unified and  harmonious painting, try putting  some of the golden flora into the sage ...or at least a transition between the golden plants and the blue/green sage.
