16x20 oil on textured canvas Inspiration Joe V I used brighter color and changed the flowers. I had a great time painting this cheerful scene. I plan to visit all the missions in our area and do some plein air, this was helpful practice for palette etc

Dang, I am sorry I missed this one way back when.  I am just now seeing it.  Your colors delight me!  That far building beyond the arch is my dream hide away.  I would love to live in this gorgeous garden and I can smell the fragrance of the flowers.  The brick flooring is perfect.  Smiles to you Ann ;-)

Thanks Laura and Linda ! Its definitely a painting that appeals to the ladies ! I wanted a happy bright painting, a little too sweet and a little too flowery but that mood suits me !

Great job with the flowers. Soft flowers contrasted nicely with the more rigid solid bright walls. Beautiful choice of colors. Makes me look forward to Jo's upcoming flower paint-a-long!

Ann, this is a very complicated paint, but you did a great job on it!

Thanks so much Michael. I will get out my liquin and work on it. JV painting was a small watercolor and the foreground light/shadow was just a brush stroke or two moving in that general direction but because of the medium differences his pointy shapes just melted into the dark color water colorey foreground. Thanks again

I don't have a problem with the value or the color Ann.  It reads as a shaft of light an sits in its place because you painted a nice transition lighter value next to it!! ...if you had painted the shadow darker there, it would have been too much.  Why it looks like someone tossed a bucket of paint ..as you stated .is because of the jagged shapes you have ..did JV paint those jagged shapes?  Those jagged line shapes garner too much attention and seem to say that the sun is coming in from behind us?    Get rid of those sharp, jagged shapes and put it into the shape of the archway ...soften the edges quite a bit, and put a warm (cerulean blue or thalo blue) transition color between the light and the shadow ...make it softly blend into the light and softly blend into the shadow.  I think that will help.  So, basically it is the shape that is bothersome.

Thank you my friends ! You are all so encouraging, your comments are important to me. I do have a question for all of you. I have been trying to understand the light on the shadow plane and the shadow on the light plane concept.that Michael has explained to us but I am concerned that the light coming into the front shadow area is too light in value. It looks a bit like someone tossed out a bucket of peach paint. I messed with it and redid it a couple of times. Now that it is dry to the touch do you think it would help to glaze over it to tone down the color and a lower value shift.
