I'm much happier with this version, especially the boat and reflection. My colours went a bit muddy in the background though. I'd like to get a more painterly style, but never seem to be able to achieve it and wonder if my paints play a part in that.
I'm using Lukas Water Soluble Oils - and I can't seem to lay down a brush stroke without picking up the underlying paint. Does anyone else have any experience with this - or is it just a problem with my techniques?

I've used both traditional professional oils and Holbein water soluable oils. I haven't noticed any difference. For me it has to do with the amount of paint I put my brush and holding the brush lightly at the correct angle. Sometimes, depending upon the colors, it just works better to let it dry.
Hi Michael;
I've tried all three methods for the under painting. But the problem also happens in the general painting process. For example trying to model the hills - when I try to lay a highlight or shadow over parts already painted it picks up the paint underneath; or if I try to adjust edges or something - it picks up too much paint instead of blending two areas together.
Roberta, You handled the design of the water and sand very nicely!!! The boat and its reflection are outstanding!!! Are you putting in your under painting thin. Are you using water, medium, or scrubbing for your under painting? Where were you having trouble picking up the underlying paint on this painting ?
