What a Master he was!!! ...I would not have had the guts to paint those background mountains so dark!!!  He did it, obviously to make the town in the background sparkle via contrast.  The "payoff" .so to speak, is that everything in FRONT of the mountain had to be painted much darker!! ....so you have all of these dark tones and Sargent still makes the painting glow with light and luminosity. .....!!
