outdoor color study#1 for VAA

I have great respect for plein air painters!! First, what a sight trying to set up - stayed in my yard because I have no idea what I'm doing!! My photo seems to have autocorrected the exposure and lightened everything in the source photo - this was a corner under a pergola at 5pm - I think I should try for early light to get more contrast? Things have to improve from here!! I tried to keep shapes simple and colors flat - hopefully by the time I reach 100 I am doing better!!

Starting from your own backyard is a good idea. I have been member of VAA since last 6 month or so, but haven't been doing exercises. I guess I should start from there.

It's great to have access to the material for whenever you have the time - I find myself getting stuck on some parts - like this outdoor study - I don't have the right easel or materials for painting outdoors - If i filmed myself it would make a great comedy!!! I find the process so frustrating that it deters from from getting out there again..little by little I hope to get the things i need to make the trek easier!

I joined VAA early last year and am really just getting around to the exercises (so don't feel bad Robin..at least you never lose access to the material so you can always go back to it)..I hate homework too!! However, I realize I need some structure to help me move forward so I'm giving a try,,albeit going at a snails pace!!! Just so much life to contend with!!
Laura..you are doing so much painting and your practice is showing in great results! You are disciplining yourself and getting out there- I need a push!!
