One of my newer hens just started laying these greenish eggs. I thought it was an interesting. It seems like they want to get in on the WS 30 broken color action....BTW, I write the date on each one so we eat them in order and the ones on the bottom don't get too old. ; )

Ningning, the egg color is genetic just as our eye color is genetic..usually predictable to a certain breed.  So, the same chicken will always lay the same colored egg  (maybe a little darker or lighter depending on diet).  My hens are unknown cross-breeds, so I wasn't sure what colors they would give me!

Silvana,

I'm not sure what you can do.  I have a dog, too, but the hens are in a large fenced area that the dog can't get into. Here is a good chicken forum ; ).  www.backyardchickens.com

We've also got hens, but for the time being they haven't laid eggs with green shells! Now, it's some time already that we cannot eat them because our dogs find the eggs first........!!!!!! Any ideas of what to do?(different fro closing the hens up and tying our dogs!)

Ann, I haven't cracked one open yet, but I suspect they are all the same color yolks ; ).  Although, Colleen likely knows--if her hens are free rangers, that the egg yolks of hens with access to grass are a higher chroma deep golden orange-yellow, which is indicative of the higher Omega 3 fatty acids present.  Green eggs and ham, anyone?

I hope our new hens don't start to lay green eggs! I wouldn't know whether to eat them or not. But you are right - maybe they have heard about the broken color challenge! :-). BTW we date our eggs too for the same reason.
