This is #18 of my Daily Painting Challenge of 365 paintings in 365 FOR 2104.

5x7 inches, oil on board.

I am studying how an orange glows in the light. This took quiet a bit of colors. In addition to yellows and reds and oranges, there are blues and greens in this orange. I think I am getting the hang of it. This is something I am working on, so I will be doing more of these over the next several days.

Hi Pandalana.  I was talking about the orange, but it applies to anything.  Basically, do not make a shadow with its compliment. .....use a darker version of the color and then if you want to punch some other color into that (reflected light), then you can.  This way, the shadowed color will not be muddy.  On an orange, for example, I would first mass it in with some neutral color ..then indicate the shadow side and its reflection in a darker orange tone.  On the edge of the shadow and light side, I would put the background color (cool transition). ..then I would paint the area just as it is beginning to turn into shadow ..it would be the truest color.  I would then put something down for the highlight, then paint the light side while carving into the highlight paint.  I would then modify edges, and then put a thick piece of paint for the highlight.  The highlight is usually (not always) white + the compliment of the main color of the object.  For instance, in an orange, the highlite would be wt + Blue, in an apple, Wt + thalo green, etc.  BUT, it does not happen on brass or copper.  Bottom line:  refrain from using compliments to shadowize your object.  The reflection on the table is not a shadow.  Since it is a reflection, then you would use the oranges color blended into the table top color ..(just like you would do with water).  Also, Pandalana, the reflections look more realistic when they do not mimic the object ..use vertical strokes just like you would with water reflections.

Thank you!  Thank you Michael, are you talking about the shadow on the table?...or the orange itself?

Very good Pandalana.  Love the movement in this one.  Pandalana .suggestion for you:  Avoid using blue (compliment) to shadowize your orange ....use darker oranges.
