Its so much harder to do all these steps when you are outdoors trying to get started. I think to go from plein air to larger studio pieces one has to try and build up to the larger pieces. I've just spent the last couple of hours working in photoshop even before I start my value studies. It is a little like doing notans as I already have done the first drafts of the scene on location. Where I have a problem often is the initial start, trying to identify what I want my visual concept to be. Richard just given us a nice long list on the painting workshop PDF he sent us the other day so I've pulled from there 'Light shapes moving against dark shapes'.

As I'm trying to also do two larger pieces 36"X24" and have then work together as a pair or stand alone. I'm going to work on them together. This is fun trying to get them to flow together no matter which side they are on to each other. And have the light of course streaming in the same direct.

mmmm will be very interested to see those when you post them

It seems like a lot of work notans and value studies and colour studies but look what Richard produces!!!!

Have never painted plein air A treat in store for me????

Hello Annie,

Glad you are back and all is good. I'm very thrilled and waiting for it to show up at my door. You must be thrilled with the new grandbaby!

I'm trying to get going on the next workshop as I like to sink my teeth into these early in the month but I've just been mulling it over in my head.

The plein air pieces I did last month at the beaver pond late in the day are the 2 that I want to enlarge so I can start with these and try some color masking studies. I just loved the way the late light was skimming the top of the water and lighting up lilly pads. Once I tried a few studies I'm hoping it will be well worked out for the larger pieces. I've tried a couple of my plein air pieces to go larger but I find I just get stuck and they are unfinished, so something has not been working for me and I guess it's the studies that I've skipped by. Denise
