Oil on Canvas. 14 x 10. My first serious oil painting after taking my paints out of storage. It's been 33 years since I last painted in oils. This was finished three weeks ago. It has totally inspired me to go on.

Nice work Michael.
Li and Mailynne - Thanks so much for your comments. I appreciate your stopping by and taking the time to comment. It means a lot to me. Especially when I'm sitting trying to decide where to put the next brushstroke, thinking I don't really know what to do, then I remember these kind comments, and they keep me going. :-)
As Marilynne mentioned you make each brush stroke count. Superb!
Kudos on your self-portrait after so long away from painting! I have never been brave enough to attempt one. I especially like the painterly quality your work has. You really seem to make each brush stroke count.
I love it! Especially the way the face was painted.Excellent contrast of colour tempratures.
yep, I can definately relate to that. Night after night being kept awake by imagination.
Manneherrin - Last night was another one of those experiences. Painted until 01.30, then couldn't sleep. Kept on replaying bits of the painting in my head... And then sleeping fitfully, wanting to wake and get back to it. The beauty is there all the time.
I thought I was the only one that was kept awake by their art. When I close my eyes I get vivid pictures and I have to sketch them then my mind goes crazy and burns the image into my subconscious and I dream about it. Makes for a rough night. Yes, Hue, value, chroma. Im not a learned artist. All Ive learned is what the gracious teachers on you tube share. And there is a lot out there. Thank you for painting whats in your heart because after all everything we put onto canvas is a reflection of our psyche. Keep that brush wet and let your mind wander to beautiful places.
Jessica - Thanks for the encouraging comment. I searched for the colour. At the end of the first twelve-hour painting session I felt like I had been on some kind of drug. I couldn't sleep. Just kept seeing colour washes behind my closed eyes.
Susan - I don't think my hand was cunning before. I've never painted like this. And tes, I prepared the canvas with an Indian Red acrylic ground. Thanks for the love. :-)
Sharon - I think for the first time I realised that evry brushstroke needs to be considered. (Certainly at the place where I am at.) My beard has grown longer since the avatar picture ;-)
Manneherrin - Thanks for the comment. I appreciate that.
Sivana - Thanks so much for the exclamation marks and CAPITALS. :-) Your Avenue is deserves some WOW!!! too.
Stu - I'm keeping those paints out of storage!.
Abdiel - that was the hardest part for me, and hence the very careful observation.
This was all about values and hues. I realised for the first time that I wasn't try to paint 'something', I was trying to get the hue, value and chroma right, brushstroke by brushstroke, compared to the one next to it. It's all about smal shapes next to each other, and when they are considered together, then the eye sees them as something. Big lesson for me.
Excellent! Love the way you place cool grays next to warm gray flesh notes to suggest structure in the face area. Stu is right, keep your paints out. Good work!
