Another study of the same apple I painted a couple of days ago, this time reversing the light & dark in the background, trying to make the cast shadow warmer closer to the apple & cooler & lighter as it gets further away, softening edges etc... Painting on oil painting paper isn't so easy, but I used it because it's inexpensive for studies like this.

Yeah, this is great!
Nice!
Thank you Silvana - I think I may go back to inexpensive canvases instead of this paper for these studies!
Thanks a lot Michael - yes, I really like the changes & it was exciting watching the apple begin almost to jump out of the background! The cast shadow looks much better, but, I have to say I could not actually observe the warm/cool aspect of it. Maybe it's the light I'm using. I'll try that method with the highlight - thanks for all the tips!
Wow, much, much better Jessica ..what do you think about the changes? Do you see how the reversal of the background adds to the contrasts? ..exciting, isn't it!!? On your highlight: Make the highlight larger then needed, then break into it with your apple color, then remake the highlight into the middle of that. Try painting that last part of the highlight with white and a speck of thalo green ...the compliment.
Ireally understand you Jessica! Though here the paper for oil is qute expensive too! WhatI found really cheap is the mdf boards and then I eithergesso them or prime the with acrylics!
Your apple is excellent. Specially like light reflection.
