6" x 8" oil on panel

I'm on a monochrome stint right now. My goal is to force myself to only paint in monochrome for the next six months. I know that's a long time, but I really want to learn my values and experiment with surface texture and brushwork.

If I achieve my goals sooner than that, I'll move up to exploring various limited palettes.

I'm kicking it off with a self portrait.

This style also lends its self for NOTAN studies I should think. When I squint it looked NOTAN. Ro

Excellent work. I think you are on a good goal of 6 months of value studies too. I once went to a western art gallery in Tulsa, Oklahoma where their was an entire room filled with B&W paintings that either Russell or Remington had painted. Each one was very detailed and took a lot of time. So..........you are just doing your paintings to fill a room when you are showing in some famous museum some day! YES! (smile) //// I too am studying value of color. I am doing Richard's color course and his basic exercises--painting in a 9 or 5 value scale black to white. I am still working on cubes and other shapes to show how light/color changes. I look forward to your next value studies. Ro
