Like the abstract design you've got going here, Stu. Nice near music..and far, ;) Great variation in colors and strokes. Hurrying through CA, had to stop here and there...back to work!

Thanks Dor.  Fun trip to SoCal, even if just to see my sister's smile.  Wish the painting had come out a little better (I haven't fixed it yet in the studio), but so it goes with plein air painting.  Practice, practice, practice is what it takes to become a better plein air painter.    Stu

Stuart, thank you so much for your detailed instruccion. I print it out to read and think carefully. I do everything very slow from when I was a baby.  Your photos are very helpful and at the same time I enjoyed  the seascape and much more a beautiful lady next to you smiling while you are laboring. It makes me laughing, very nice.

Thanks Li.  I like your slicke very much as well.   This is the closest our paintings have ever been to each other!  This is a good sign.   I still need to send you those photos of my plein air gear.   The  VAA  library reference material on plein air equipment is an excellent reference as well.   My best advice is to make everything as light as possible and keep it well organized so that you don't forget anything.    I keep my plein air gear packed up and ready to go all the time.   When I finish painting, I dump my OMS out into a glass jar to settle out the sediment and clean out the bottom of the container and pour fresh (usually decanted from another glass jar) OMS into the container, take out my painted panel(s) and replace them in the panel carrier with fresh panel(s), wash my brushes and put them back in the brush carrier, and refresh my paints, dispose of my dirty paper towels and take any sketches I have done out of my backpack.   Now I am ready to go out again.   I keep my carryon packed and ready to go and put it in the back of my SUV.   Here are some photos of me painting at the beach in Southern California after Christmas (that's my sister with me) and a photo of my backpack/carryon that everything except the tripod is packed in it (the tripod is in the blue bag strapped on to it, and the carryon can be carried as a backpack).   I take my gear on planes with all the artists materials and tripod in my checked luggage and clothes in the carryon along with my paint box and panels.   I will send you a whole list of everything I pack and some photos; I will probably make this into a blog and paste it on here.   I don't know if I told you, but I am all signed up for a 12 day long plein air painting festival in Cedarburg, Wisconsin this June (my son lives near there, so I will have a nice visit there).  Also, if you buy a pochade box, get one as light as possible and get a photo tripod that will bear the weight of your painting box, they break fairly easily.    Stu

Thanks Pauline.   I hope it fits in with the surrounding pieces.   I think I got the values and colors pretty close.   The hardest part was mimicking the brush strokes; maybe I should have tried a large house painting brush?  Next challenge shaping up and looks like fun.   I have dozens of marinas within a 25 miles of me, so I will probably paint  from my own photo references and give a stab at a plein air boat painting as well.    Stu
