So Montcello-Elephant Butte SP-En Plein Air

There is a story to this attempt. I got set up and had my umbrella to get me in the shade as well as my palette. I could not see anything. No colors on my palette nor on the canvas. Moved everything in the sun. The colors did not photo well and there is not that much golden yellow in the painting. I used a medium gray mix in all the colors (like RR did in Mastering Sunset 8) so the colors are desaturated. The lake was silver. Not pleased with the foreground and suggestions would be appreciated. Crits welcome. Oh, and the icing on the cake to this story is when back at the RV and unpacking I brought the 2 palettes in and left the back door open that had the painting sitting on some cardboard. Turned around to see the cardboard blowing across the ground, and sure enough the painting was on the ground and up side down! Not too much damage as only a few bits of dirt to deal with when it is dry. Add that to my en plein air check list.......high winds, bugs on canvas, biting flies, and so the list goes with many more entries and now canvas on the ground. sigh

Hi Roena, it's so sad to hear this story. But as I know,  you can fixed it later on and turn to one more masterpiece!

If to compare with photo, from my look, you can put more dark green to the foreground  and make sky and water more in cool blue. Maybe, make less greens on the back and add more light brown, as on reference. And I like the mountain on the left, can feel hot weather.

What a challenge Ro!!im swing road rather than water..perhaps bc the lake was silver. I think you need the foreground darker...and vary the values in the bg some more..maybe change the sky or add cloud variation?
Here's what we've learned. ..what was it in the scene that attracted you? Can you exaggerate that in your painting?

I hear you and feel your pain ! My advice is to chock this one up to experience and try again at a new spot on a new day. Your masterpiece is waiting
