My attempt at this month's workshop. Looking for comments, I did a bit of this before I knew the challenge was broken color. Not sure where to go from here??

Frank, this is a great start!  Before this lesson, I mistakenly thought "broken color" meant the same as "broken brush stroke".  Now, correct me if I'm wrong Michael.....I believe it means that a shape that ordinarily is all one hue(blue, for example) and all one value is now interspersed with a few strokes of a different hue (green, for example) of the same value.  This works best if you get the values spot on in the first place.  A good way to check that is to look at your painting in black and white in any editing program and compare it to the reference photo in black and white.

You have a good painting here and some excellent suggestions. The broken colour is tricky to grasp and I haven't tried it yet. Maybe watching Richard's video demonstration a few times will help you.of course seeing it and applying it is the hard bit! That is what we are here to learn though how to stretch ourselves and get out of our comfort zones. You can do it!

Hi,

Thanks for the comments.  This is oil on linen and I used walnut oil for the medium so it will take a week or two to stiffen up.  I will then try to do broken color in the water and on the boat although I'm not sure what that really means, just the painting Richard did as an example.

Agreed.  It is a great underpainting for the workshop.  What medium is it?  It may not be oil.

Hi Frank.  You have plenty of time, so may I suggest that if you want to do the broken color thing, wait for this to dry and then put liquin (or oil out), and then repaint over this.  This could be your underpainting.  BTW, this looks pretty good!! :)
