Thought I might try some colorful still life for fun. It took me abut three hours with pencil. I have not done one in a long time.

Hi Michael, I knew you would give me a better understanding!  I gave up last night as I was not quite happy with my painting.  Thank you so much and I do understand what you mean, I just could not see it then.  It is funny, I am always pointing this out to my students, that is,  dark/light, yet I do those same mistakes myself!

P.S. Steinunn.  A very interesting arrangement of light and darks could have been had if you had placed the lime overlapping the orange (grapefruit?) a little ...then the lime would have cast a nice shadow onto the large fruit and thus tying in your darks into a whole shape....thus making the whole thing a little more interesting.

Hi Steinunn ...your work is always lovely, cannot help to notice, my friend.  I am referring to light and dark (value), not color.  Light against dark ..that is on of the contrasts we strive to get.  You have two overlapping shapes that are of the same value ..this confuses the spacial placement of the two objects ..even though the lime is overlapping the lemon.  The two objects painted this way, fail to separate in space.  Even though you did not see a value change there? ..you must invent one to get the light against dark think going.  So, what to do? ...I would suggest that you shadowize the part of the lemon that is against the lime ...since the light source is coming in from the upper left, that would make sense that a dark plane would be residing there ..even though it is a light lemon, it still has dark shadow ...my last posting, "Bougainvillea", has a yellow wall with a dark shadow ..check it out to see what I am trying to explain ...albeit not very well!

Hi Michael, I was hoping you would notice, no this is oil on canvas. I can see the light did not come out too well huu.:) Should it have been a lighter green and lemon??

Hi Steinunn.  Is this colored pencil? ...pretty nice.  Be careful about light against light ..as in the lemon and lime.
