This is an oil on canvas pad (ugh!!! just for practice) after William Trost Richard's "Rocky Surf" using complementary blue/green-red/orange palette with a bit of Naples Yellow for good measure (and a touch of Alizarin Crimson).

I think your record keeping Carolyn is a great idea and I'll be having a peek of that RTR website shortly. Richard sure has started something with this wksp. We all sound pretty enthusiastic. Roll on the next workshop. With lots of interesting comments, we all learn from them.

This is great Lori - it led me to the Richard Trost Richards website which is inspiring to look at - some beautiful seascapes.

Thought I would offer my two cents on the practice thing. Pretty liberating to not worry about materials and waste. I've purchased a large roll of primed canvas, I'm pre-cutting it to the sizes most used for practice; i.e. 11x14"; 12x12"; 12x16"; 16x20" (with 2 inches added on each dimension for stretching if it is a keeper). If it is a keeper, I can attach it to panel or Gator Board and trim or mount it using stretcher bars once that is called for. This also really helps with the storage issue as well. Once dry to the touch, they can be stacked with glassen between and takes up very little space. (For drying time, I've adapted Roena's cool trick and just hang them up back to back on a clothes hanger, thanks Ro...working great!) To keep track of the who-what-when, I'm using a simple spread-sheet with the pertinent info and which "stack" it is located and where. Since I've just begun painting again, there is not much recorded...but there WILL be! Maybe this will help some of others too.

Hi Lori. I know how you feel about making a nice practice painting you probably wish you put it on a stretched canvas right? I do that all the time and then when I actually paint on stretched canvas and go for it, I don't like it as much as my practice one! I think it is basically fear that I will ruin a good canvas. How do we get rid of that mentality? Anyway, this is great. Love how the waves feel so alive. Frame it anyway. Just go get a photo frame and knock out the glass. I do that with my smaller practice canvas paper ones and give them away.

It feels so real Lori!  I like your color choices.  Great job!

WOW ! These waves popped out of my PC screen and into my living room and then went back out to sea carrying me with them !  So beautifully done !

Beautiful ocean scene - those splashes seem to be coming right out of the computer screen, they are so real!
