Susan, Nice treatment of the other reference for the workshop. I have not had chance to work on it yet.
Thanks Deedee and Tammy!
You have really done a great job on atmospheric perspective. I also like your brown touches on the rocks.
Thanks, Charles! I have a small t-square on my paint table, I just didn't think to use it! Silke, I like the way you think!
The rocks and tree point to the left, not the right. Have a look at the shadowy dark interruptions of the rocks. from their start at the bottom of the canvas they all run diagonal to the upper left.
Ok, if you see the start at the top of the rocks, they run in a right diagonal downwards :-)
Depends on point of view...
In critiquing my painting of a house, the instructor reminded me that edges should be straight and perpendicular to the ground (unless the house is falling down). An 18" clear ruler has been at my easel ever since, and I refer to it often to make sure I don't drift. Adding darks (values of 0-3) adjacent to lights (values of 8-10) creates sparkle if that is the direction you are heading, however, I saw your painting as subdued or Cristina stated, 'moody'. The more the values range in mid-tones, the more subdued the outcome. Likewise, overuse of white creates chalky colors. Michael is right about the upper left mountains being extended.
Thank you all! I am very right-handed (I cannot play the piano because anything my right hand does, my left hand follows!), I didn't even notice the rocks and tree point to the right! I thank Michael and Silke for their suggestions, I'll keep them in mind for my next try at this. I'm satisfied with some of the things I've done here; but, it doesn't have the sparkle and spontaneity that Richard's painting has! That's what the next try is for!
Lovely work Susan - I like :)
Great atmospheric recession (like Mike says) - nice subdued color harmony
