I decided I wanted to try my hand at improving my ability to paint landscapes, and do so with working with broken colors. I had 14 small jars of paint in my freezer left over from all my past paintings. I pulled them all out and found that much of the paint was still good. How interesting to have so many different colors all mixed up! This is a 8x10" oil. I was trying to paint with no details. Ha ha .... Will keep trying. CRIT WELCOME

Your composition looks good Roena. I agree with Ann's comment about the distant planes. Take a look at the values of your trees, for instance ... they are all the same dark value ..from front to back. You have some nice shapes ... and some not so nice shapes. This foreground rocky area on the lower left ... nice shape .. the rocky shape on the right ..could be better. Good shape with the stream, not so good of shape with the pine tree at the left edge, and the round bush with the conical tree sticking up from it. Watch your color temperatures and tones ..... cool some of those colors off (as Ann was saying) as they recede .. and watch those edges my friend. Your broken color in the foreground rocky area is great! Nice complimentary colors broken into the red/orange with just color changes and not value changes ...excellent ... you need to do the same with the green grassy planes .... try indicating more of the rocky structure in the background plane .... maybe use more blue/green ..the compliment of the red/orange .. in your grass and background trees? I also agree with Ann about the value of the sky. Anyway, most of the "problems" are occurring in the middle and background ...the foreground is wonderful.
I like this a lot, Roena - it's a good compo and that's important!
I am fascinated with the foreground rocks and the way that the water lays on them. Beautiful ! Think about making the far trees and grass softer and greyer to indicate distance. It might also help to have the sky slightly lighter than the water. Just some ideas to make the distance more believable.
Dreamy! Nicely done Roena!
