Casey, as I see it, you have several problems with this painting: First, you have too much texture everywhere and it makes it look very busy; confine your impasto passages to your focal areas, I.e., clouds, waves, sand, foreground,etc, and probably limit the bold texture to 1/3 or less of the painting. Second,mass you rocks together into larger shapes; they kind of look like a bunch of pebbles. Third, clean up your trees by varying their sizes and variegate the colors and values to give them some depth. Fourth, if you want to keep the figures and because they tell a story, make them your focal point by emphasizing their hue, value, contrast, etc., and create a lead in to them along the shoreline sand. Your composition is nice; the painting is very tonal with mainly burnt sienna and ultramarine blue and you could make your figures, trees, sky or water pop with a little color. Check out Stephen Williamson's submission with moss on the rocks, a colorful umbrella, etc. I hope this posting is not offensive to you, and remember, I am not Richard, but just another painter like you.
