8" x 10" oil. I'm not happy with this but don't know if I'll get a chance to redo it this month.

Marianne, This was a good start on a challenging workshop. I like Michaels ideas about the flame. Makes me want to try a candle block.
Thanks Silvana, Laura and Ann, and especially Michael - I really appreciate you taking the time for your super-helpful critique! :-)
I'll add an encouraging word, you have set yourself a challenge here. Maybe Richard could have a workshop where we learn candle glow. It would be an advanced class for sure :D
Good approach Marianne!
D I F F I C U L T ...! But the first step is trying!!! Good for you Marianne!
Hi Marianne. You chose a tremendously difficult texture ...the translucence of the wax and the glow of the candle light fire. .....a study of contrasts, edges, and values for sure ......you came pretty close to the translucency on the shadow side ...the sharp pink is out of sync. The main problem is the lack of glow around the flame, the flame itself, and the lack of translucency on the light plane of the cube. One way, I think, to get the flame and the glow, would have been to paint the dark value of the top of the cube and then "wipe back" the flame and the halo ..dab back any highlights on the top plane (with a Q-tip) and then paint the light into your wiped out section ...beginning with a very light cool white (perhaps) and painting warmer tones outward (like the sunset paintings) until you gently merge into the darks of the top plane. I guess I should try this before trying to suggest anything, but it seems like a good strategy? ....Maybe a little darker around the cube to emphasize the glow. There are other ways to do this, but I have bored everyone enough.
