oil on canvas panel 11" by 14"--this is "2 value" underpainting for Workshop 9 from Johannes Vloothuis photo reference set (IMG_3136.JPG). I used an expanded limited palette with Galkyd lite medium with titanium white, pale yellow ochre, transparent earth red, indian red, ultramarine blue and viridian (all colors from Gamblin, except pale yellow ochre from Winsor-Newton). Same palette will be used for final painting.

Thanks Ruby.  I will post each phase as I go.  It's tacking up now, so I should be able to paint over it today or tomorrow.  The Galkyd lite is an alkyd medium from Gamblin that accelerates drying of the linseed oil in the paint (It's like Liquin but a little less viscous, so your paints are a little more fluid and it adds a little gloss).  I am trying to stick with Richard's techniques (which are excellent) so that I learn from this; but I usually do a similar underpainting both in the studio and outdoors and paint over it when it has tacked up.  I can't post my photo reference because of the copyright, but I have not been to the Grand Canyon for 25 years and any old photos I have are on 35mm slides.  You want to mainly use an earth tone palette with muted reds and yellows for this; this is just what you would do for any desert scenery (you have a lot of desert country in Namibia, don't you?).  Stu
