Otto, thanks for the comments, I made some further experiments and it actually works a lot better without the tree. I had to rush into colour mode because of a load of work fallen on my shoulders, I hope I'll be able to finish it in time!

Paolo,  Nice work, good design.  The sky mentioned in a previous post or two, for me, is not visible in your design. The background (to me) is a continuation of the layering of the different planes of hills/mountains, etc. receding into the distance.  I do find the large, dark shape (tree) on the left edge of the design distracts my attention from the center of interest.  My eye keeps bouncing back and forth between the tree (darkest dark) and the lightest light.  I think with only a bit of tweaking, you've created a major contender.  Best to You, Otto

Thanks for the comments guys.

Stuart, I always have problems at finding the right value for the sky, and you're right about the value of the water. And I agree, brightening up the bit in the middle with some white clouds would imply having the snowy mountain in shadow.

I might actually try that, finding the right colour for the snow is always quite tricky (at least for me:))

Anyway, looking at it this morning I think I'll lower the point of view just a bit to make the mountains and the trees more imposing. I'll also make the river wider to enhance the perspective.

Paolo, after looking at your study again.  I think you could keep the sky dark if you made it cloudy with just a hint of some sunlight breaking through and falling on your river, but your snow would all need to be in shadow to be darker that the river highlights.  As Iwan said, very original.  Stu

Paolo, nice value study and good composition, but your sky is a little dark to give such light values on the water.  Usually your water light areas will be slightly darker than the sky unless it is all spray or falling water.
